The basic plot outline is that of a classical Disney movie: Gabriella and Troy, though very different types of people, meet at a New Year's karaoke party and are randomly chosen to sing a song together. They go their separate ways but coincidentally meet up at school, as Gabriella’s family just moved. The drama teacher decides to hold a school musical, and Gabriella and Troy ponder whether they should sign up for the lead roles together or not. The problems they face include: 1. They would be competing against Sharpay and Ryan, who are the school’s # 1 drama duo, having starred in many, many plays, and 2. Troy needs to lead his basketball team to victory (he’s the team captain, and his dad’s the coach) and Gabriella is recruited to join the decathlon team for her smartness. They have to all work together in order to accomplish their goals. Of course, there are complications along the way that must be resolved in order for everyone to do what they must.
Yes, High School Musical is a musical, but it is really well done. Some of the songs are quite catchy and will get stuck in your head for days after seeing the movie. The movie can be enjoyed by both boys and girls. Also, if you get the DVD, you can watch the karaoke version and sing along with Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay and Ryan. You can also learn their awesome dance moves!
