I left the theatre shocked and disappointed and a little disturbed after seeing this movie. It was a very confusing story to follow, especially not knowing very much about the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). The movie takes place during the cold war, and Edward Wilson is determined to help his country.
Edward is part of the Skull and Bones society, and there he meets his future wife, Clover, who later becomes Margaret. They are forced to marry after she becomes pregnant with a baby boy. Edward’s skills lead him to help the Office of Strategic Services. This was later to become the CIA. The movie follows his job as well as the relations he has with his family. The job eventually leads him to sacrifice many of these ties as well as what he values, especially when his son decides he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and ends up falling in love with the ‘wrong’ woman.
After having thought about this movie quite a lot, I’m still not sure why everything happened in this movie or what exactly happened. I guess if you enjoy spy movies and know about the CIA, then you might enjoy this movie. The film was loosely based on real, historical events. There wasn’t a lot of action, more developments. I do have to give a hand to the actors for playing their parts well. Matt Damon (Edward Wilson) did an excellent job of being serious, cold, and not letting anyone in.
