Not totally sure what I was walking into, I came out of the theatre slightly surprised at the end of this film.
A group of close friends plan to host a surprise going away for one of the group who is leaving to take a job in Japan. Jason and Lily convince Hud to take control of the camera, documenting the party for Rob, who is also Jason’s brother. Two major storylines combine to form the basis of the movie: during the party, Beth, Rob’s ex-girlfriend, arrives with a new guy, creating tension between the two and also during the party, an earthquake-like eruption that the group realizes is the result of a ‘thing’ attacking the city.
The plot follows the group of friends as they start to escape the city, only to realize that Beth is in trouble, and turn around to save her.
The film contains intense scenes and no music to accompany the moments. Also, the fact that it’s filmed through the characters’ camera, makes it feel as though you are walking through the streets with the group of friends as they encounter the Thing.
Filmed entirely by handheld camera, the shaky movements have been known to make some people feel nauseous.
