Though a very long movie, the third Pirates movie in the (so far) trilogy was well done. There were many action scenes and the special effects were pretty awesome. The plot outline seemed difficult to follow as the story progressed farther, though things did clear up at the end of the movie… for the most part.
Many of the characters’ actions were intertwined and all dealt with the same situations, though all had different ideas on how things should be handled, and their ideas were not told to others.
Basically what happens is that Barbossa, Elizabeth and Will, along with their crew, set their sails in the direction of World’s End, which happens to be Davey Jones’ Locker, in hope to rescue Jack, after he and the Black Pearl have been capsized by the Kraken at the end of Dead Man’s Chest. In order to do this, they need the map which Sao Feng has. Elizabeth and Barbossa begin to bargain with Feng for a ship and a crew, not realizing that Will has already snuck in and found the map. Just when Feng spots a traitor who is with neither of the groups represented, Lord Cutler Beckett’s army bursts in, as they want to control the whole of the seas for the East India Trading Company. A huge fight breaks out and carries onto the streets where one of Beckett’s men overhears a conversation between Will and Feng, about Will wanting the Black Pearl in order to rescue his father.
Eventually, the crew gets a ship and heads for World’s End. After arriving there, Jack is rescued, along with the Pearl. They head back to ‘reality’ after Jack cleverly deciphers the code; the way in which they return to the real world. In Jones’ locker, Jack experiences a number of hallucinations of himself, which is to represent all the different sides of him.
This is where I began to find the story confusing. Will needs the Pearl to rescue his father on the Dutchman; Beckett controls Jones’ alive and beating heart in order to control the Dutchman, and therefore the seas, for the company; and Jack wants to control the Dutchman in order to have eternal life. Along with their objectives, the other characters also have certain wants. All of these certain ‘wants’ end up conflicting with each other in some sort of way and many bargains and so called back stabbings occur.
I left the theatre not knowing how to feel about the way this movie occurred, but after some thought, I think that the movie and ending was well done, based on the circumstances
What I enjoyed seeing was the fact that most, or even all, of the characters that appeared in the first and second movies (Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man’s Chest, respectively) appeared in At World’s End, along with some new faces. It was interesting to learn of some more of the connections each character had with the others, as well as learn more about the basic storyline through them.
There is rumoured to be a fourth movie in the series. And remember to stay after the credits for a brief scene depicting the aftermath of the events. (Apparently, a little scene is at the end of all of the Pirates movies so far.)
