Welcome to the Forum at Sticky Grass. If you've been coming here for a while you'll notice that this used to be the Debate. We felt that the word debate was too limiting as it has a narrow definition and coming up with topics to debate was rather difficult at times. A forum is generally a public meeting place for open discussion. Changing the name of this space thus allows for a much wider variety of conversations.
Consider this a place where you can voice your thoughts and ideas. This is your space so what it becomes depends on you. What do you have to say? If you would like to start a new topic, feel free. Just submit your idea and comments and we'll post them!

Close Open Abortion (4)
Abortion is wrong! Abortion is basically another form of murder! I understand if you got raped or if you are 10 years old or something, I completely understand. But if you're 10 years old and having unprotected sex, well let's just say maybe you deserved it. And as for being raped, you can still have the baby and after it's born and you look into its tender, cute little face and you decide your gonna not keep your child then okay, put the baby up for adoption. Many women have unprotected sex and know they are gonna have a baby. How can you knowingly have unprotected sex, find out your pregnant, then kill an innocent human being? They have no say in their deaths. I'm sorry if I have offended anyone, but I am really passionate about abortion and I believe they should make it illegal.
Cipriana, USA
This is very sad. Hopefully it will give you a different perspective on abortion.
Month 1
Mommy I am only 4 inches long but I have all of my organs. I love the sound of your voice, the sound of your heartbeat is my favorite lullaby.
Month 2
Mommy, today I learned how to suck my thumb. If you could see me you could definitely tell I am a baby. I'm not big enough to survive outside my home. It is nice and warm in here though.
Month 3
You know what mommy? I'm a boy! I hope that makes you happy. I always want you to be happy. I don't like it when you cry. You sound so sad, it makes me sad too. I cry even though you can't hear me.
Month 4
Mommy my hair is begining to grow! It is short and fine but I will have a lot of it. I spend a lot of time exercising. I turn my head, curl my fingers and toes, and stretch my arms and legs.I am getting quite good at it too.
Month 5
You went to the doctor today. Mommy, he lied to you. He said I wasn't a baby. I am a baby mommy!YOUR baby! I think and feel. Mommy, what's an abortion?
Month 6
I can hear the doctor again. He sounds cold and heartless. I don't like him. Something is intruding my home. The doctor called it a needle. Mommy, I can't get away from it! It burns! Mommy help me!
Month7
Mommy, I'm okay, I am in Jesus's arms. He is holding me. He told me what an abortion was. Why didn't you want me mommy? It could have been you.
When I wrote this I began to cry. It is really painfull to read something like this, let alone go through it.
Cipriana, USA
I totally agree with Cipriana. Abortion is totally uncalled for. The baby never gets to breathe, or see, or walk, or talk, or experience any of the joys of life. Pregnancy I would imagine is difficult and long and all that, but in the end, you have given birth to a human who may grow up to be the prime minister! And even if you feel you can't raise a child yourself, there are tons of people out there who want to adopt and who can support a child and raise them in a happy healthy home. There is no reason for abortions at all.
Cassie
I don't agree with abortions either, if anyone does they have some serius issues.

Close Open Advertising (2)
Why is it that many companies rely on women barely dressed to sell their items? A major example of this would be the beer commercials. A whole bunch of guys drinking the beer advertised are surrounded by skinny, under-dressed women. How likely is it that if you drink the beer, women dressed like they are in those commercials will dance on up to you? Apparently, sex sells. It's rather disgusting.
Alice, Canada
I have to comment on this. I don't know how many of you have seen the Pizza Hut commercial for their cheesy bites pizza. It has Jessica Simpson in it singing a play on her song These Boots are Made for Walking. This commercial is so out there it is even hard to explain all that is wrong with it. Here is the scenario: A young boy is out for dinner with his family and he orders a pizza. In comes Jessica holding the pizza and her breasts are popping out of her shirt. The boys eyes pop out of his head as she seductively walks up to him and puts a cheesy bite in his mouth, at which he falls out of his chair. To think that Jessica would portray herself this way is one thing, but to think that this family based restaurant would think this commercial is anyway appropriate is far beyond my understanding. Give me a break!

Close Open Body Art (4)
Including piercing, tattoos and radical hair styles
I don't disagree with body piercing and weird hairstyles but I don't do anything like that either (lol). The main reason I don't disagree is because a lot of my friends have weird hairstyles or tongue piercings or other weird piercings.
Cipriana, USA
Cipriana, none of our friends have body peircings!
Maressa, USA
Body art sucks. Basically because piercing my flesh with metal isn't exactly my idea of a good time but also things like tattoos. People, in my general observations, get kinda saggy as they get older. So what's to say that the tattoo of Pokemon or whatever won't get saggy too? Plus there's the whole part about colour fading, possible contaminations, diseases, groody people pretending they can draw when even though they probably failed gr.9 art and then that whole part where your likes and dislikes change as you get older so just cause a butterfly seemed to symbolize your deep inner spirit when you were 16 doesn't mean it'll represent the married with 5 kids 40 year old you. See what I mean? Blech. Stick with things that aren't so iffy.
Jessica, Canada
Jessica,
Are you saying that people who get piercings and tattoos are losers?!? If your mom had a tattoo would you have an issue with it? If your dad got his ears pierced would you call him a loser? Maybe some people LIKE to get tattoos. Maybe people like to get pierced. Plus you can take piercings out. Do you think getting your ears pierced is dumb?

What's your favourite book? Do you have a favourite author? What type of books do you like to read?
My favourite book is called "New Moon." It's by Stephanie Meyer and is about a girl who falls in love with a vampire. It's very good. Part love story, part action story. It's a wonderful book.
Cipriana, USA
I do not have a favourite book. There are too many books to choose from! One of my favourite authors is Jodi Picoult. I have read many of her books and she is an amazing author. She writes about a lot of controversial topics though and her books are definitely a high school level or above.
Mandy, USA
My favorite book is Twilight it comes before New Moon. I would advise everyone in the world to read this book! I didn't even like reading until Cipriana got me hooked on this series. I can't wait for the third!

Close Open Dating (7)
Who should ask whom out? I think the guy should ask the girl. What do you think?
Wendy, 15 Canada
I think that girls having to wait to be asked out by guys is sexist and old fashioned. Not to mention annoying. It's a new age, and girls totally have their rights, one of them being free speech, so why shouldn't they ask the boy out? It's just that, in general, I think it is the boy who asks the girl out. That's how it'd probably happen for me, just cause I 'm so shy. I guess it's mostly guys who do the asking out because they are so much bolder for the most part, and girls aren't. Also, it effects guys 'popularity' less if they're going out with someone. For girls, it has to be 'the right guy' or 'the cool guy' or whatever.
Now, of course, this isn't always true. That paragraph was fairly stereotypical and I judged it on what I know about more popular girls and boys. There are shy guys, outgoing girls, and girls who don't care what others think about them. So yeah.
Emily, 13, Canada
I totally agree that girls should ask guys out. One of the main problems with most girls is they are scared of rejection. Say it's some guy you have liked since third grade, you decide "hey you're in seventh grade now, ask him out."
All of the girls I know are afraid of rejection.
Cipriana, 12, USA
Okay, here's what I think. I'm not saying that there's a right or wrong answer to this ambiguous topic, but I do think that the boys should ask the girls. Just give the guy a chance to be the man here. I mean, if he really liked you, he probably would have asked you out already. Yeah, he may be shy, but if he's not man enough to ask you out, he definitely isn't man enough to date you. The girl should wait for the guy; she should be the jewel being "sought after." Wait on him, let him make the move.
Wendy, 15, Canada
Not all girls are afraid of rejection Cipriana. I'm not! I want the guy that I have liked since 1st grade to like me, I just don't want to tell him. I'm not afraid of rejection. I'm just afraid that he'll tell all his friends and they will make fun of me!
I tote-a-lee disagree with Wendy! Just because a boy hasn't asked you out yet doesn't mean that he doesn't like you! When you tell people that, you are bringing them down! I think that if a girl likes a boy then she should take a chance. I know it's like the hardest thing in the world to do but if you don't tell him then you will never know how he feels and you keep wondering and wondering until it drives you crazy! Trust me, I've been there!

Is it right to start dating at a young age and sneak behind our parents' backs to go out?
Trishie, 14, America
"Is it right to start dating at a young age and sneak behind our parents' backs to go out?"
It is most certainly NOT right to date behind your parents' back! That is one of the most important things to think about. If your parents are not okay with what you are doing/who you are seeing - it is for a reason and that reason is for your own good, believe it or not! As for the young age, there are many reasons as to why it is better to wait till an older age - maturity levels and the fact that you are closer to marriage are just a few.

I hate alchohol. My mom drinks and it makes me sad because sometimes she will get grumpy and grump at us for no reason. As for drugs and smoking my little sister's dad did meth and she has only seen her dad a couple times. And for smoking my friend's parents smoke and my grandma smokes and it makes me sad that they chose to do that and its SO bad for their health.
Danielle, USA
Dani,
I hate smoking too. I'm sorry about your grandma. My parents smoke (so you already know) but they said they are going to try and quit before their next birthday. If anyone you know and love is smoking I would tell them how you feel and that you don't want them to get sick or die and they will probably try and stop! It will be better for you and the world!

What was your most embarrassing moment?
One time I was staying in a hotel with my grandparents and my brother and my grandma woke up in the middle of the night because she heard someone trying to break in so she woke my grandpa up and he walked over to the door. Guess what? Nobody was trying to get in but I was trying to get out, and I was sleep walking!!!
Cipriana's friend, USA
My most embarrassing moment I ever had was when I was five years old I had just gotten new princess underwear. I was psyched! So being me I had just got home and I immediately got on my pretty new Cinderella underwear and ran upstairs where my uncle, father, mother, great grandma and grandpa, my cousin, who might I add was 14 at the time, and a guy, and my aunt were. My aunt was talking and I said,"Aunt Michelle guess what? Guess what?"
"What?"
"I got new underwear! Look, look!" I took my pants and pulled them down and you can guess what happened from there. Lesson to learn, when you get brand new pretty princess underwear, don't go around dropping your pants.

One time when I was so little I can't even remember what happened, I went into my parents room when I was sleep walking and there was a glass door in their room. I walked over to the door and started banging on it saying, "Daddy don't leave, daddy don't leave!" and then I ran right into the door! Like I said, I don't remember but it's really embarrassing when my parents talk about it!

When I was in kindergarten the kindergarten buses were shorter than the others so I told everyone I knew that I rode the short bus to school. When I was young I didn't know what that meant, now I do. It's so embarrassing!

One time when I was with my sister and her friends we went to the mall. When we went to the mall my friend bought a fart machine. He started going around the mall with the fart machine and pressing the button. When I began to talk to a really hot guy my friend snuck up behind me and pressed the button! I was so embarrased I didn't go to the store ever again.

Close Open Faith (14)
Faith
Do you believe in God? Why or why not?
Faith is a very hard thing to have. Asking someone to believe in something they cannot see or touch is difficult. Personally, I do not think there is any way to prove or disprove the existence of God. This belief is called agnostic. I accept every religion as equally plausible but improvable. If there is a God I hope that when I die he will forgive me for not being able to believe in him fully while I am on Earth.
I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and religion. I do not see the reason in fighting with each other because of religion. What is the point? There is no way to absolutely know who is right. If a Christian and a Muslim are fighting, both believe in their heart that they are backing the truth but one of them has to be wrong, don't they?
What if every religion is true? What if, when we die, we go to the place that we believe we will go? A Christian will go to heaven because that is where they think they should go when they die, and a Buddhist will be reincarnated into another animal because that is what they think will happen?
Mandy, USA
I agree with Mandy. There is no right or wrong religion, just a religion that suits each individual's lifestyle and personal beliefs. Personally, I do not totally believe in God. I believe that there is someone greater, something higher, something beyond human's knowledge, something that is impossible to even fathom. I believe that there is something higher watching over us, but I do not believe in God. I am not sure whether I think I shall be reincarnated, or go to some unimaginable paradise, or what will happen to me when I die, but I am sure that whatever it is it will be enjoyable (unless there is a Hell and I do something bad enough to go there.). I think that fighting 'in the name of God' or 'for your religion' is stupid. No offence, but really, if God or whomever you think created Earth, and put humans here, do you really think His master plan was for us all to start fighting over whose beliefs are better? Actually, I think there is a problem in that sentence, as I said 'His'. I do not believe that the greater being somewhere out there is male. I think it is a female for those who want it to be, and male for those who want it to be. Because it is all powerful, it does not need to have a set gender. Some may read this and look at is as blasphemy or whatever, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and yeah.
Penny, Canada
Penny, why don't you beleive in God? There is proof everywhere! I'm actually a little offended by what you said. Who put you on this earth?? Do you think man just suddenly appeared or something? Sorry.
Diego, Canada
Diego, there are a lot of people who, in a way, do think that man just "suddenly appeared"...It's called evolution. Why does there need to be someone who created humans? Why is it so impossible that we just appeared? As for proof everywhere, can you give a few examples because I have not found any yet.
Mandy, US
Mandy, I am ashamed. How can you not believe in God? He will damn you for all eternity for your non-belief. I'm sorry. Your damnation will hopefully give others a new way of looking at it
Darla, Australia
Diego, in saying that I do not believe in God does not mean I believe we were suddenly just placed here. Like I said, I believe in some greater power, who may or may not have created us, or it was just evolution. Is there really a way to tell? I accept that you believe in God and all that, and I believe in a Higher Power. There isn't really much of a difference, I mean, what is God really, other than something more powerful and wiser and all that than humans?
Penny
Penny, I couldn't agree more... And I thought I was the only one who thought the same thing. I do believe in a mightier power but I do not so much believe that there is a God (in my opinion). But, I do believe in karma and fate. I do believe that our future is all set and ready for us but I don't think its decided by god. Who came up with the word 'god' anyway? But at the same time, I respect those whom believe in God. I do not hold anything against them. And also, yea, like what you said Penny, if they say they're fighting for god then why isn't god helping them win? Why isn't god whispering the enemy's plan to another's ear? I really don't get it? If there really is a god then why did the tsunami happen? Why did god let so many innocent people die? I just really don't get it.
Ellie
Ellie, why don't you try reading the bible sometime? God can not control everything. It's not like God chooses who he thinks should die. God loves ALL of his children but he can not always protect them. We must sacrifice ourselves for God because He sacrificed his only son for our sins. Have you not heard that? I'm sorry you don't beleive in God but maybe you should find help from your pastor or something. Oh...Do you even go to church?
Cipriana, USA
Cipriana, I've tried reading the Bible, but it hasn't really made me believe in God anymore. I couldn't get past the part in the New Testament where God says that you must love him more than your own family. I just wouldn't be able to do that.
I personally prefer the idea that every thing on Earth has a spirit and the Chinese belief that our ancestors look after us. In today's world of technology, it's hard to believe in spiritual stuff, because scientists are all proving them wrong. I believe that everyone must stick to their beliefs, stand up for them, and be proud of them, whether they are Christians, Jewish, Buddhist, Islamic, or atheists. The world would be a pretty boring place if everyone thought the same thing and there was no controversy, and I believe that this is why all of the various religions have been made over the years.
Cassie, Canada
I agree with Cipriana. GOD can't control who lives or dies, it's our own decision. We decide if we are going to kill someone or rob a bank. Not GOD.
Kyla, USA
It's true. God does control a lot of things but as for the natural accidents and everything, well everything happens for a reason. and if you decide to kill someone or rob a bank that's your decision. One of the things God doesn't control is our right to choose.
Just Someone, USA
Thanks Just Someone. Ellie you need to think how you word stuff because when you said, "Who came up with the word 'GOD' anyway," it was really offensive.
Cipriana, USA
If you believe in the evolution of man do you believe in the big bang? The theory that there was a big explosion and the world was there? There is no proof to back up that theory.
Kyla, USA
Obviously there are a lot of different opinions going around here, and I think that maybe people should just accept that some people think that God exists, and others don't. It's really a pointless argument, seeing as there isn't any proof of God, or the Big Bang theory, or anything really. Is there really any way to know what did happen? If we get proof that God exists, I'll believe it. If we get proof that the Big Bang is what happened, then I'll believe it. Until then, I don't know what to believe, so, just like everyone else, I take my thoughts, make a choice between science and religion, and that's what I'll believe until there's proof.

Close Open Friendship (10)
What makes a great friend?
What do you do about some friends you have who you don't think are acting like very good friends to you right now? Like, I have these two friends who are at my school with me, and our fourth best friend is in a younger grade and at a different school. I love all my friends a lot, but having three people trying to be best friends is really hard. Because the other two have known each other longer, they tend to sort of gang up on me, and I don't know what to do, cause I want them to be nicer, but I don't want to start some sort of fight...... And I have no other real friends at the school, cause I am a nerd and geek etc. I really don't know what to do. Being the 'third wheel' sucks, cause you don't feel wanted. Please help!
Jenny, Canada
My friends are everything to me next to my family of course. But my friends and I get in fights a lot. Sometimes I don't know why and sometimes I do. They say it's because of my attitude and yeah I realize that but my friend (name withheld) is pretty mean and she thinks the whole world should revolve around her and it makes me mad. She is nice to me sometimes and then sometimes she can be a real b****. My dad says that I'm just a friend of convenience to her because she is only nice to me when she wants something or if something is not going her way and she wants us to fix it or if she doesn't have anyone to hang with then she's nice. Please tell me how to deal with this.
Cipriana, USA
Cipriana, To me, it sounds like if your friend is really like that, then your dad is right. Maybe you could try to talk to her about it. Telling her how you feel about being treated like you're only needed when none of her other friends are around.
Cassie, Canada
Hey Jenny! I know the feeling! I know this might seem hard but I think you should tell your best friends how you feel. It was realy hard but I did it and it worked! Hope this makes you feel at least a little better! :)

Cipriana, about yur problem with your "friend" I think that you should tell her how you feel and maybe she's just not a good friend and you could do better.
Ressa, USA
Ressa, are you saying I shouldn't be friends with this girl? Our relationship is really important to me, and I HATE it so much that we are fighting. It breaks my heart. She and I have been friends for a while and we used to tell each other EVERYTHING! Now she acts as if I've done something so completely unforgivable and I want to do something to make it up to her. Any suggestions?
Cipriana, USA
Well Cipriana, have you done something seriously unforgivable to this friend of yours? Cause if you haven't, then it's not fair what she is doing to you and you should probably have a serious talk with her. I don't want you breaking your friendship or anything, friends are too important for that, but I think you should maybe point that out to her, cause if she's not acting like a friend to you, how can you be a good friend to her? The scale is unbalanced.
Cassie
One of my "friends" has been harassing me and my other friend lately. I decided to go to the principal and tell her what had been going on. One of my other friends told her I reported her and now my friend is totally denying everything she did. My friend saw her flip me the bird and my other friend heard her call me a slut numerous times. I'm really disappointed it had to come to this. My friend had really been being a jerk. I have some anger issues and I had been holding in not calling her anything or doing anything to her and I suddenly popped and got like two inches from her face and told her to shut up. I was hyperventilating I was so mad.
Cipriana, USA
I have a friend and she's being a butt. She is mad at me and my other friends because we're trying out for cheerleading. She's only mad because she doesn't like cheerleaders! Isn't that stupid?! She is such a stereotype!
The Girl, USA
Yeah 'the girl', I have a friend who once commented that all hockey players think they're super cool and strut around the hallways. I'm a hockey player, and I don't strut. It's really annoying when they're being so stereotypical, hey?
And Cipriana, I really think that you should find some people who you can trust to be good friends and not do the things some people have been doing to you, and just drop the friendship with these people who aren't helping you at all. I mean, if they're that rude to you, why should you still consider her your friend?

Gays and Lesbians are people too. Not giving them the right to marry is like taking rights away from women. We have gotten over (for the most part) the injustices placed upon women in the past, though there is still some discrimination there, and we are getting to stop discriminating people of colour, so why can't gays and lesbians marry? Not letting two gay men marry is like not letting a black man marry a white woman.

What kind of music do you like? When do you listen to it?
I love music. I am always listening to it, every second I get. I have an mp3 player so I can listen to it everywhere. I usually end up spending most of my money on music downloads.
My favourite band is Yellowcard. It is the kind of band that you either like it or you hate it, I think. If the only song you've heard from them is "Ocean Avenue" then I really think you should get some of their other songs. My favourite thing about their music is the violin, it really gives them a unique sound.
Mandy, USA
I LOVE music. My life basically revolves around music. When we are in the car and talking as soon as we stop talking the music turns on immediately. (lol) The quiet kinda scares me. I have an iPod and I normally have it or my CD player wherever I go.
Cipriana, USA
I love music... It's not my life but I couldn't live without it. If I couldn't sing I don't know what I'd do. I don't carry an iPod or an MP3 and I don't have to have my tunes with me every step of the way. I listen to my friends music and listen to all types from screamo to folk. It's just how I roll. It's the way I am. In a way it's a part of who I am and it reflects my moods. Country is how I kick it but I can chill to anything I please.
Alexan, Canada
There's no question about it, I LOVE MUSIC! Music is the centre of my universe. I wouldn't be able to live without music! There's a song that me and my family listens to and sings together. It's The Anthem by Good Charlotte! It so funny! The typical Kodak moment, especially when my dad sings!
Maressa, USA
I don't really listen to a whole lot of music, but when I do listen, I prefer classical or a variety of other stuff. I like to listen to bands such as AC/DC, Queen, Black Sabbath, the Rolling Stones, Billy Idol, Bryan Adams, and just music in general. I listen to country a lot, because of my dad. I play the violin and flute, which adds to my liking classical stuff, but the fact that you can also play fiddle music on the violin makes me like country too. I don't own an Ipod or mp3 player and my cd player is rarely used, but I like to listen to music from our 'various artists' cds that my dad burns on trips out of town or camping. I don't know the artists to a lot of the songs I listen too, and I don't like all the songs that some artists play. I listen to pretty much everything, but I don't like rap and I'm not partial to hip-hop/pop.

I think the song Alyssa Lies is the best, but it's also the saddest. If anyone would like to listen to it then you can on youtube.com.

Global Warming
I'm not so sure that global warming is anything to worry about. In fact, right now as I sit stranded in my home town with all the highways closed due to snow squalls and whiteout conditions, I wonder if it's really getting warmer. I'm not saying we shouldn't work on reducing our impact on the environment, but how do we know for sure that we aren't just in the warming part of a multi-century natural cycle. I've read somewhere that Greenland used to have a thriving agricultural community back in the middle ages before the earth got too cold for a growing season there.
Roger, Canada
I'm not so sure I totally understand all that's happening with Global Warming. I have no idea why it would be such a problem... What are the consequences? When will they happen, if they do happen? Can someone explain?
Jo, Canada
Global warming is happening, that has never been in question, the thing scientists are confused about is why. Is it natural or did we humans cause it. Check out these global warming facts from National Geographic. I think they will clear up some of the confusion. I think global warming is a natural thing but humans are just contributing to it. It would happen with or without us, we are just making it happen faster.
Mandy, USA
Global warming is a natural thing, but yes, humans are great contributors. Ants alone let off a gas that is enlarging the hole in the ozone layer. Humans too are effecting it, because of all of the pollution we produce from our cars and factories, etc. Even if we all tried to stop polluting the air as much, I think global warming would still happen, just not as quickly as it is now. Of course, it is winters like this, when it is still snowing in the late March that I doubt that it is a huge problem, even though I know it is because when my parents were kids, the snowdrifts were several feet high in March, and now it's all in little piddly amounts.
